How to Get More Aerial Roots on a Monstera

Posted on April 07 2023

Aerial roots are a unique characteristic of Monstera plants that can add to their visual appeal and help them absorb nutrients and moisture from the air. If you're looking to encourage the growth of aerial roots on your Monstera, there are a few things you can do.

First, make sure your Monstera is in a suitable environment. These plants thrive in humid environments, so if you're in a dry area, consider placing a humidifier near the plant. You can also mist the plant with water regularly to help increase humidity levels.

Another important factor to consider is the potting mix. Monstera plants prefer a well-draining potting mix that's rich in organic matter. You can create your own potting mix by combining equal parts of peat moss, perlite, and vermiculite. This will ensure that the roots have access to plenty of oxygen and can grow freely.

Once your Monstera is in a suitable environment with the right potting mix, you can encourage the growth of aerial roots by misting the plant regularly or placing a humidifying tray near the plant. You can also gently wrap a moist sphagnum moss around the stem of the plant to encourage root growth.

Another option is to use a plant hormone, such as indole-3-butyric acid (IBA), which can stimulate root growth. Simply dip the aerial roots into the hormone powder and plant them into the potting mix.

Finally, be patient! It can take some time for aerial roots to develop and grow, so don't get discouraged if you don't see immediate results. With the right environment and care, your Monstera will grow and thrive, producing more aerial roots along the way.
